Arrangements by Charlie Harrison
Jeff
Lindberg's Chicago Jazz Orchestra completed one of their most
heralded seasons
this past year. The season kicked off with trumpeter Roy Hargrove in a
world premiere arrangement of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.
Originally composed for solo guitar and symphony orchestra by Spanish
composer Rodrigo, Gil Evans’s arranged it in 1959 for Miles Davis, and
included it on the landmark Columbia album Sketches of Spain. The CJO’s
new version, transcribed and arranged for an expanded orchestra
including strings by artistic director Jeff
Lindberg, is based on the
Gil Evans version but includes elements of the original orchestral
version.
This concert was followed by another world premiere of Nelson Riddle’s
sweeping composition, Cross Country
Suite (1958) with clarinetist and NEA Jazz Master Buddy DeFranco. Cross Country Suite is
an
eleven-movement work painting a unique portrait of America, capturing
the flavor of many of its regions. The eleven movements have
never been performed live in their entirety. Artistic Director,
Jeff Lindberg, collaborated with the Nelson
Riddle family in
reconstructing the complete work for this live world premiere. Read the

Amongst several other spectacular concerts, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra
concluded the season in April with a magnificent performance at
